Pregnancy is an exciting time of joy and anticipation, but all too often it is coloured by pain, discomfort and illness. Many changes are related to weight gain, body repositioning and posture; however this may also include heartburn, indigestion, morning sickness, sciatica, back pain, breathing issues and fatigue. Many changes can be helped by chiropractic care. Realigning the spine and pelvis can help take the strain off spinal joints, shoulders, neck, back and legs. When the pelvis is misaligned it may reduce the amount of room available for the developing baby. This restriction is called intrauterine constraint. A misaligned pelvis may also make it difficult for the baby to get into the best possible position for delivery. This can affect the mother’s ability to have a natural, non- invasive birth. Breech and posterior positions can interfere with the natural ease of labor and lead to interventions such as c-sections.

Preparing for Childbirth

One of the concerns many mothers face is that their baby be in the breech or transverse position when it’s time to deliver. Most often a caesarean section is scheduled and most women would prefer to attempt a natural birth if possible. What many women don’t know is there is a specific chiropractic technique boasting a very high success rate (75%-95%) that turns babies. If a woman finds her baby is in the breech position and the due date is fast approaching she may want to seek out a chiropractor to do Webster’s technique adjustments. Dr. Heidary has had significant success in utilizing this technique in his practice for 20 years. Also Dr. Jay Rappazzo is currently being certified in acupuncture has had success in inducing labour. When women are past their due date, some seek out acupuncture as an alternative to Pitocin. Back On Track has helped many women who are overdue, jump start their labour with acupuncture.

Chiropractic and Infant Care

Birth is probably one of the toughest events we undergo as humans. During their journey through the birth canal a great deal of stress is placed on the baby’s neck and head. One can see the baby’s head often takes on a cone like shape to pass through the birth canal. The baby’s head will gradually revert to its natural shape, but often slight damage is done to the spine and neck during delivery and the baby will be left with discomfort and an inability to function at his or her best. Studies have shown that 80% of infants suffer from spinal misalignment. The following symptoms have been linked to misalignment and therefore managed with chiropractic care: Colic, Feeding problems, Constipation, Frequent spitting up, unsettled sleep etc. Since baby’s bones are still quite soft and malleable after birth, few adjustments are needed for your baby to feel better and allow for you and them to enjoy their early years.
