If you have felt sharp pain that runs from your backside down your leg, you are already aware that nothing seems to help, not moving, changing position, walking or sitting. It is a nagging and disruptive pain which interferes with work and play. Sometimes it is accompanied with numbness, tingling in your leg, pins and needles and pain all the way down to your feet. If you have had it once, the chances are good, you will experience it again. It is called sciatica and if you are ready to make the decision to stop letting sciatica control your life, then read further as we explain what sciatica is and is not. Then we will give you some non-surgical treatment options.
What Sciatica Pain Is and Is Not
Let’s begin by making it clear that sciatica pain is a symptom of some other problem in your body. It is not a medical condition on its own, but it can become chronic if you don’t address the underlying cause. Not until your issue is diagnosed and it is treated, can you begin to get relief.
Many people who experience sciatica for the first time reach for the Aleve or Advil or some other over the counter anti-inflammatory or pain killer in hopes that will take care of the problem. It may for a while but unless the cause of the sciatica pain is found and treated, it will just reappear.
The typical sciatica pain and weakness, numbness and tingling feelings are a result of an injury to the sciatic nerve or pressure on that nerve. The sciatic nerve starts in the lower back and runs down the back of the leg. This nerve controls the muscles in the back of the knee and lower leg. It also give feeling or sensation to the back of our thighs, some parts of our leg and the soles of our feet.
Patients may find that the pain increases when they first stand up or sit down, when sleeping, or when they cough, laugh or sneeze. Each patient has different levels of pain associated with sciatica, and the pain is usually confined to one side. Some sciatica sufferers find it mildly irritating and annoying, but it can be completely debilitating and cause someone to be unable to move.
The Real Causes of Sciatica
We have already noted that the pain of sciatica starts from an injury to or pressure on the sciatic nerve itself. But what exactly can cause that to happen?
The real cause of the pain is Sciatic Nerve Impingement. This usually occurs due to a herniated or ruptured disc. More often than not the problem originates from the lower part of our spine
● Our spinal bones are separated by discs which cushion the spinal column. Our discs allow movement between our vertebrae so we can bend and move. When one of these discs moves out of place or breaks open, it is known as a herniated disc or bulging disc and this causes pressure on the spinal nerves. When it breaks open completely is a ruptured disc.
● This situation can be a degenerative problem which happens over a long period of time, or it can happen suddenly due to excessive straining, lifting or a fall.
● Middle aged and older men and women should especially be aware of lower back injuries and take precaution when lifting heavy objects.
